This is the CM Ranch Guest Book from about 1933 - 1952. It was badly water damaged when Charlie and Marion Moore were living in Palm Springs after they left the ranch, but one of our employees from 2007, Kate Ensor, typed it up as best she could. It's long - scroll down, you might recognize a name or two.

This book is present to the
CM Ranch
by~
Mrs. W. H. Sayre
Of Essex Fells, N.J.

April 5th 1930

Having just completed this book, I claim the privilege of being the first to sign. Additional modifications are that Charlie Moore and I be of one blood; that I was at the old ranch first in 1910; that I was with him last in 1928; and that I have helped to build a very small part of the CM to commemorate the happy hunting days there.

“We rode with Marion along the ridge-
high above the ranch.
Where to the south lay blue Torrey Lake
and to the west the marks of Avalanche.

Toward the distant Crest of Togwotee Pass,
was the canyon of Simpson Lake
And to the North the painted cliffs
While the Absaroka’s our imagination take.

Below the sun bathed green grassed place
Where Marion and Charley call home-
Nestled among the folding hills
Where Mommie and her offspring roam!

Blessed by stranger or the friend
Who walk within these gates-
And shares the wealth of friendship
And of their hospitality takes.

And on these acres –where peace abides
Among lodge pole pave and Wyoming sod.
In this War-torn world –here is quietude.
Where one can be closer to one’s God.

Gratefully and with
Affectionate regards

September 1943
God knows why it has taken me fifteen years to arrive in this fresh and incredibly beautiful country. We have never spent a vacation so complete with happiness, - every moment doing things one really loves to do. A thousand thanks to Marion, Jim & Charlie for their meticulous care and thoughtfulness in planning a whole summer’s visit for a single week. You could better appreciate our gratitude had you lived this full year in Pensacola. Once again, our appreciation.-

The term “dude” has assumed many different meanings, but in the early days of dude ranching it simply meant “someone who went west and paid for lodging, food, a horse and guiding services”. To today’s dude ranchers, the cherished term “dude” has the most respected and honorable description. A dude is friend, someone who a dude rancher invites into his home, shares his lifestyle with, teaches horsemanship and other outdoor skills to, and mutually enjoys and takes care of the pristine environment of the West.

The exact date and origination of dude ranches is unclear, but it is known that the appeal of the magnificent Rocky Mountains drew hunting parties, remittance men, and a few adventurous travelers such as Isabella Bird, to the West in the late 19th century. These travelers’ needs for guides, horses and a place to stay prompted a few enterprising cattle and sheep ranchers to begin charging for these amenities. The alluring life of the cowboy also drew attention to the West and easterners began to crave the simple freedom that the cowboy represented.

Dude ranchers introduced both Theodore Roosevelt and Owen Wister to the West before either man was famous. Notable among early dude ranchers were the Eaton brothers, Howard, Alden and Willis, who had a large cattle ranch in North Dakota, and started taking paying guests in 1882. They moved the ranch to the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming in 1904. The Eaton Ranch is still in business today and remarkably still run by the same family.

There were a number of individuals who saw profit in the easterner’s fascination with Yellowstone Park which prompted them to start dude ranches. In 1906 Charles C. Moore began taking boys on pack trips through Yellowstone. The boys, all from the east, arrived by train in Lander then spent a week or so at Charles’ ranch near Dubois Wyoming to learn the skills necessary for their 10 week trip through the park. Charles soon realized that the families of the boys also desired to spend time in the West, and would pay money for guided outdoor activities, so he developed the CM Ranch into a facility that could comfortably accommodate and provide western adventures for individuals, groups and families.

Many other notable dude ranches surrounded Yellowstone Park, especially in the Dubois area which proved to be an ideal locale due to the pleasant summer weather. Dudes flocked to Dubois where they were captivated by the unique scenery and varied landscape. A number of ranches, including the Absaroka, Bitterroot, CM, EA, Lazy L&B, T-Cross and Triangle C are still successfully catering to dudes.

In 1926, the Dude Ranchers Association was formed, originating from the idea that it would be advantageous for dude ranchers and the railroads to work together. Cooperative advertising campaigns by the Northern Pacific and Burlington Railroads were critical in keeping the interest in dude ranches alive. Later, travel by air and car became more popular. The Dude Ranch Association remains a strong and supportive marketing organization.

Even though most dude ranches began primarily in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado, throughout the 20th century dude ranches popped up all over the western states, as far west as California and Oregon and a far south as Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. A few dude ranches appeared in Canada, and it is said that there was one in Hawaii for a short time. Most dude ranches attempted to attract the harried urban dwellers who would find a calm lack of pretentiousness by spending a few weeks as a dude.

Some did not survive the tumultuous years of the great depression and World War II, but the ones that did became more committed to the characteristics that are still the most important features of dude ranches. The key ingredients are: 1) the main activities are horseback riding, fishing, hiking and sight-seeing; 2) food, lodging, and horseback riding are offered at one price (The American Plan); 3) advance reservations are required; 4) people are on a first name basis; 5) hospitality is genuine and guests do things together as part of the ranch family.

As one would expect, dude ranches have adapted to the changing desires of vacationers, and different programs and amenities have been added throughout the years. However there remains one solid and simplistic feature of genuine dude ranches; the owners and managers maintain the rich tradition of “families who take in friends”. They provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in which their guests can enjoy horseback riding and other outdoor activities in a beautiful and scenic part of the world. Dude ranch vacations, in their third century of popularity, are a treasured and favorite destination, and for many people, a life-changing experience.
